Charles Hazlewood comments
Charles Hazlewood was in the audience at the February 3rd 2008 concert, the first time he had heard the orchestra since becoming Patron in 2007. He wrote to the management following the concert:
"The Elgar/Strauss/Rimsky concert I attended was a wonderful introduction to the warm beating heart that is OrchestraWest. I use that description specifically because that's how it felt. An ensmble of wonderfully committed and enthusiastic spirits sharing their passion - their delight- in music with a very grateful audience.
To create a professional orchestra in the West of England is a tall order; various attempts have come and gone over the years, despite the enormously creative history of this corner of the country. It is hard at times, especially with Bristol's paucity of provision for music making, not to see the west country as a kind of cultural desert. But look a little closer, and there are sparks of life. And OrchestraWest is more than a spark now: it is a flame."
