Classical Star to play at Patron's concert
Having been in the audience at OrchestraWest’s concert on February 3rd (see review) on his first visit to Taunton, our Patron, international conductor and broadcaster Charles Hazlewood, has chosen the programme for his own concert with the orchestra on Friday November 21st – and a high profile event it is destined to be.
Mr Hazlewood will be bringing with him pianist Sophie Cashell as his soloist. Sophie was the fiery winner of the BBC2 TV series ‘Classical Star’, of which he was one of the judging panel. She will play the Mozart A major Piano Concerto, and, says Mr Hazlewood, playing with OrchestraWest will be “a great experience for her.” The Mozart will be paired with the Haydn ‘Farewell Symphony’ – a wonderful piece of theatre.
In his letter to OrchestraWest, Mr Hazlewood also said that he had been astonished at the standard of performance by the orchestra under its conductor John Cole. “The concert was a wonderful introduction to the warm beating heart that is OrchestraWest”, he wrote. “I use that description specifically because that’s how it felt - an ensemble of wonderfully committed and enthusiastic spirits sharing their passion – their delight – in music with a very grateful audience.”
He went on; “To create a professional orchestra in the West of England is a tall order; various attempts have come and gone over the years, despite the enormously creative history of this corner of the country. But there are sparks of life. And OrchestraWest is more than a spark now: it is a flame.”
If anyone would like to reserve tickets for the concert, which will be at 7.30pm on Friday November 21st in Kings College Chapel, please contact Anne Curtis on 01380 831454 or through the website.
Before then, however, there are concerts on May 10th (Bruch Violin concerto and Sibelius Symphony No 2) and July 19th (Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto). Tickets for these are already on sale through the Brewhouse Theatre Box Office, Taunton Tourist Information Centre and online here.
