Singers Wanted! All Voices!
.jpg)
Are you too young to remember the Somerset Summer Chorus? Or are you perhaps experienced enough to have sung in it?
The reason for the question is that John Cole is revisiting his youth and forming a Festival Chorus to take part in a single performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with OrchestraWest, as the opening concert in this year’s Westival Arts Festival. Just as the Summer Chorus drew its members from individuals, choirs and choral societies all over the County, so we would like the Festival Chorus to have representatives from Minehead to Frome and Bridgwater to Ilminster – and who knows, perhaps even from Devon and Dorset! He is hoping for around 100 singers, no passengers – the choral movement is short, but a Big Sing.
The concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday July 19th, in the Chapel at King’s College, Taunton. We will have a short schedule of four rehearsals:
Sunday June 29th from 10.30am to 12.30pm, and from 2.pm to 3.30pm (i.e all day)
Tuesday July 1st from 7.30pm to 9.30pm
Tuesday July 15th from 7.30pm to 9.30pm
and with the orchestra on Saturday 19th July from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
Because we are limiting rehearsal time, he needs to encourage singers who are reasonably experienced – you must be able to get to performance standard in those four rehearsals.
It’s going to be a wonderful concert. As you know, OrchestraWest is Taunton’s own fully professional symphony orchestra, playing to an extrememly high standard, and we can guarantee an exciting evening for singers and audience alike.
The first half of the concert will feature Stuart Ellsmore playing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E Flat, and we have some exceptional soloists engaged for the Beethoven – Naomi Harvey (soprano), Alison Kettlewell (mezzo), Justin Lavender (tenor) and Eddie Wade (bass).
The cost of being part of this Awfully Big Adventure is only £15, (£5 students), which is a contribution to rehearsal and music hire costs, hire of Kings and our rehearsal venue, and to including you in our mandatory insurance cover. If you would like to be part of the Festival Chorus, please fill in the attached form and send it with a cheque payable to OrchestraWest before June 1st, but the sooner the better, to Mrs Anne Curtis, The Wilderness, The Butts, Bratton, Westbury, Wilts BA13 4SW.
